Yu Xuejun delivered a speech

At the opening ceremony, Yu Xuejun explained that in recent years, my country's biomanufacturing industry has seen significant growth in independent innovation, rapid improvements in equipment levels, significant increases in green manufacturing, and remarkable results in energy conservation and emission reduction. The biomanufacturing industry, represented by biofermentation, is expected to generate an output value of approximately 330 billion yuan in 2023 for major products, a year-on-year increase of approximately 4.5%, with exports expected to reach approximately 7.36 million tons, a year-on-year increase of approximately 12.7%. He stated that the healthy development of microbial protein, as a new sector and new business model for biofermentation, is crucial for accelerating the development of new quality productivity and creating a new growth engine for biofermentation.The China Bio-fermentation Industry Association will build a good platform to promote industry exchanges, accelerate the standardized and healthy development of microbial proteins, and continuously promote my country's bio-fermentation industry from a "big country" to a "strong country".

After the opening ceremony, Academician Xie Mingyong delivered a keynote speech. Academician Wu Qingping gave a special report on "Construction of a Scientific Big Database of Wild Edible and Medicinal Fungi Resources in China and Its Efficient Development and Utilization," introducing the construction process of the wild edible and medicinal fungi germplasm resource bank and big database, as well as the research on the transformation of research results.Academician Wu mentioned that my country still needs to strengthen the improvement of wild edible and medicinal fungi isolation technology and the expansion of resources, establish a systematic phenotypic and genotypic database, research key technologies for the precise and long-term preservation of edible fungi, and establish an efficient and innovative technology system for germplasm resources.

Academician Chen Jian delivered a special report titled "Microbial Protein: Tasks and Challenges," outlining the current tasks and challenges of the industry's development from the perspective of the microbial protein industry chain. "The rise and development of alternative proteins has greatly alleviated the problems of traditional protein production. By producing meat, eggs, and milk through workshop-based production, this has revolutionized the food protein manufacturing model and achieved high-quality supply." Academician Chen Jian believes that with technological advancements, the alternative protein industry is poised for rapid development.

During the conference presentations, Li Ning, Director of the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center and Chairperson of the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Expert Committee, and Jin Fen, Researcher at the Institute of Quality Standards and Testing Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, presented their respective presentations on "Requirements for Safety Evaluation of Microbial Proteins" and "Challenges in Microbial Protein Regulation and Safety Evaluation." Regarding flavor modification and nutritional health, Zhong Fang, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Jiangnan University and Director of the Key Laboratory of Food Perception Science and Technology of China Light Industry, provided a better understanding of the appeal of alternative proteins from the perspective of flavor and texture. Xu Baocai, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, and Dean of the School of Food and Bioengineering at Hefei University of Technology, shared the current status of research on mycoprotein-based meat simulations and offered insights into their future development. Li Chunbao, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Nanjing Agricultural University, delivered a special report on the nutritional and health benefits of meat.

In addition, Li Demao, a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented a keynote speech on "Research Progress and Development Trends of Microbial Proteins." Liu Yanfeng, a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Center for Future Food Science, Jiangnan University, shared his research findings and insights on "Microbial Protein Strain Enhancement and Food Processing." Li Huiyue, Vice Chairman and Senior Engineer of Fushine Pharmaceuticals, presented a keynote speech on "Fushine Microbial Protein Industrialization Practice and Application," sharing Fushine's successful cases and practical experience. Furthermore, Lü Hong, Distinguished Professor at Fudan University, Jiang Ling, Professor at Nanjing Tech University, and Li Jian, Professor at Beijing Technology and Business University, also gave keynote speeches at the conference.

Fushine Pharmaceuticals signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Hong Kong Green Alliance Co., Ltd. and Malaysia's Ultimeat(M)Sdn Bhd., and jointly issued an initiative for the microbial protein "Industry-University-Research-Application" Industry Alliance with Jiangnan University Future Food Science Center, Jiangxi Normal University, Jiaxing Future Food Research Institute, Yixing Food and Biotechnology Research Institute, Hong Kong Green Alliance Holdings Co., Ltd., Ultimeat(M) Sdn Bhd and Muen (Guangzhou) Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

Fushine Pharmaceuticals reportedly possesses a novel strain with fully independent intellectual property rights and has received a notice of acceptance from the State Intellectual Property Office. The company has successfully industrialized ton-scale products and has received orders for 1,200 tons of microbial protein products, with production and delivery progressing as planned. To meet market demand, the company also plans to invest in a 200,000-ton annual microbial protein and resource comprehensive utilization project (Phase I). Upon completion, the project will have an annual production capacity of 20,000 tons of microbial protein and 50,000 tons of amino acid water-soluble fertilizer.

Concluding remarks

At the end of the meeting, Wang Jie, Vice President and Secretary General of China Bio-fermentation Industry Association, took the stage to make a summary speech. She said that the association will continue to promote extensive cooperation among government, industry, academia, research, application and finance, and play the role of bridge and responsibility of the association in basic research, technology iteration, application development, standard system, compliance construction, policy guidance, investment support, and popularization of science in the field of microbial protein, so as to guide the sustainable and standardized development of the industry.
